Click the Text Outline button, move the mouse over Weight and then click More Lines in the sub menu that appears:.We now need to show the Format Task Pane with the Text Fill and Line options and there are several ways to do this. Now select the text frame (the box around the text) and click the Format tab in the PowerPoint ribbon.Add a text box to the slide and write your desired "special" text within it:.We're using the default Office theme in this article. Note that actual colours will depend on the template/theme you are using. Below is a step by step guide to the process. Well, we're going to go back to the first issue and make use of what we did to demonstrate it. But although the glow effect transparency can can be set, the feathered edges cannot: One might then consider using the glow effect instead since this renders from the perimeter of the glyph outwards, without encroaching the inner area of the text. This isn't usually a problem when adding a basic thin outline to text but since we're creating "fat" bubble text, it doesn't yield the desired effect as seen here because the outline appears (somewhat unexpectedly) both inside and outside of the text: To demonstrate the problem, here is some black text where a thick red outline has been applied and then this outline has had its transparency set to 30% so we can see the rendering challenge when zooming into the 'x' character (glyph): But because Microsoft renders outlines on text equally inside and outside of the outer perimeter of the font outline, it doesn't work as required. So why is this creating this kind of text effect not straight forward?įor frequent PowerPoint content authors, it may look like the affect in the article header should be really easy to implement by simply setting the the outline of the text to orange and the required width. You can also achieve the same with PowerPoint:mac 20 although the references to the PowerPoint UI will be different. We're using PowerPoint 2016 for the PC but the same steps apply to 20. By the end, you'll be able to recreate the "Bubble Text" in the image at the top of this article but along the way, you'll have discovered many techniques that can be applied more generally to your presentation creation workflow. You discover how to use some of the advanced features of the Format Task Pane, how to organise your content with the Selection Task Pane, how to use special keyboard shortcuts and hidden context sensitive menus. Going back centuries further, you can read Thomas Brook’s Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices-an astonishingly insightful book (Thank you to Tim Keller for the reference). It’s a book that has not lost its punch seven and a half decades after its publication. Lewis, of course, treated the subject of the presence of evil in the world masterfully in the Screwtape Letters, written during the ravages of the second world war. Because, of course, there is.Įven writers like Steven Pressfield, who don’t profess a Christian faith, acknowledge that there’s a force in the universe that works against good when it comes to creating enduring art.Ĭ.S. It’s like there’s a virus in the system that we just can’t seem to shake. The scripture’s understanding of the battle between good and evil began to explain a good deal of what I was feeling inside of me as a leader, but also around me in relationships, in culture, and even, sometimes, in the church.Īgain… please don’t hear extremism in what I am saying. But even if you’re skeptical about evil, you might also have noticed that we do live in a strange world, with headlines that inevitably depress, good leaders that get derailed, again and again, people that struggle against each other and against themselves. The greatest mistake you can make with evil is to overestimate or underestimate its influence. And Jesus himself acted as though evil was very real. At least that’s what the scriptures claim. And in some way, it’s probably influencing your thought life, ministry, and family right now. It doesn’t have ultimate power, but it also isn’t powerless. In a similar way, the greatest mistake I believe you can make with evil is to overestimate or underestimate its influence. In the case of the latter, every time the toast burns or something doesn’t go their way, Satan is behind it and it’s time for an exorcism. There are some Christian leaders who never talk about Satan and others who talk incessantly about him. The challenge, I think, lies at the extremes. Talking about the work of the enemy is not an easy task. And all of us a sudden what I read on the pages of scripture about a battle between Good and Evil started to feel like last Tuesday. And most people who talked about evil today were, well, a little off-balance or just didn’t understand science well enough. Well, that’s kind of what I used to think too.Īs a young Christian, I believed that what the scriptures taught about evil was accurate, but accurate in a this happened thousands of years ago kind of way. Only the crazy people believe in evil and an actual Enemy, right? Sipping water and minerals from mud, males often conglamorate in a characteristic called "puddling" (Berger and Lederhouse 1985). Sweetbay magnolia, (Magnolia virginianais) is a major host plant in Florida. Common host plants are those of the families Magnoliaceae and Rosaceae. This large butterfly produces at least three and possibly four flights in Florida (Scriber 1996) begining in late Febuary or March. Females are dimorphic having a morph with black or grey replacing the yellow on the wings, darker bands may still be visable. It is not only one of the more common butterflies globally, but it is also the most common butterfly in the U.S. They can also have greenish marbling on the wings. The ventral forewing margin has a yellow bar that is broken into spots. The Cabbage White butterfly is a mid-sized butterfly that usually has a combination of white, cream, yellow and black marbled wings. The postmedian area of the hindwing is black with yellow spots on the lower margin and small red and blue spots on the inner margin. Males are yellow with four black bands on the forewings, the outer edge of the forewing is black with a row of yellow spots and black veins. The marbled white species are black with many large white spots and a white outline around their wings. Zebra longwing butterflies are fairly common throughout Florida and is most abundant in South Florida hardwood hammocks and thickets, they will often group together in a quiet spot.Įastern Tiger Swallowtail - Papilio glaucus Wingspan is from 3 to 5 1/2/ inches. Zebra longwing begins laying eggs shortly after emerging from the chrysalis and will lay from 5 to 15 pinhead sized eggs on Passion vines, the larval host plant for this beautiful butterfly. It is relatively long lived among butterflies having a life span of several months as compared to weeks for most butterfly species. Found throughout Florida, being most abundant in South Florida. The designated Florida state butterfly, the Zebra longwing has long, narrow wings with distinctive black and pale yellow stripes, it flies in a slow graceful manner. Zebra Longwing Butterfly - Heliconius charitonius The Zebra Longwing butterfly is unique in that it is able to feed on a flowers pollen as well as the nectar, this is an excellent source of protein and scientists attribute their long life span to this fact. When I was trying out different fruits I learned that kiwi’s are too acidic for this, and the gelatin won’t set properly with them (or other acidic fruit) in it. I love the additional color and taste that adding the berries gives. The floating fruit is the best tasting raindrop cake in my opinion. For the leaves, it’s important to keep the angle of the needle close to the top of the gelatin sphere to that they sit at the “bottom” of the flower. Slight changes in the position of the needle will give you different angles to be able to create the petals. Make sure that your colored gelatin has cooled slightly before injecting it. Be careful when using the syringes as it hurts when you poke yourself! Not that I would have done something so stupid or anything. They are also available on Amazon, and try animal feed stores too! You want the larger gauges for the needles so that the gelatin mixture can easily get through. Gelatin art is something that I have been wanting to try for a while now and the only “difficult” part of this version of the raindrop cake is trying to track down syringes! I went to my local pharmacy, and despite feeling very awkward asking, I managed to get some syringes from them. Citric acid is a “ natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic (sour) taste to foods and soft drinks.” When you are choosing a flavoring for your raindrop cake, use an extract that is clear so that the gelatin isn’t clouded with the color. If you’ve worked with gelatin, you know that there is always a slightly yellow tinge to it so in order to make it clear, I had to increase the ratio of water to gelatin, add lots of sugar and some citric acid. Having seen so many people already recreate the traditional version, I decided to put my own spin on it and make it a little bit (completely) different, and in three different ways!įor the traditional drop I went with a clear gelatin base. Basically, the original is a mixture of water, and agar agar, and served with the soy flour and syrup. Mizu Shingen Mochi is a Japanese dessert that has apparently been around for years, but a NYC company decided to bring it to it’s insane current popularity by introducing it at their market as the Raindrop Cake. We won’t even start talking about the syringes yet. The other pieces include the brown sugar syrup (not so odd but also hard to find but can be easily be substituted), and agar agar (tastes like the ocean and yes, hard to find). Thank you friend! Lisa came to my rescue with the flour, which is just one of the odd pieces that make up this “cake”. If it wasn’t for my friend Lisa, I wouldn’t have gotten the roasted soy bean flour so quickly to try this dessert with. Much like referral codes, this means I earn a small commission if you purchase a product I referred (at no extra charge to you).Today I am showing you how to make the super popular Raindrop cake, but I’m putting a personal spin on the idea and showing you three different ways to make the Japanese dessert Mizu Shingen Mochi! In this step by step tutorial, I will show you the regular raindrop cake, one with gelatin art inside and another with gelatin floating fruit!įinding “exotic” ingredients in a small town can be difficult, so thank goodness for friends who live in big cities and send you random things when you put out a cry for help on Facebook. *Some of the links contained in this post are affiliate links. SPECIAL TOOLSįreshware 6 Cavities Half Circles Silicone Mold* (You can also make these in sphere ice molds) Please refer back to my original post for more details on the process of making these and for photos of the ingredients needed. And for those of you in Southern California, the raindrop cake is now available at Smorgasburg LA. I know the raindrop is basically just water, but when eaten with the roasted soybean flour and syrup, it’s such a light and refreshing dessert that works so well in the summer. I’ve made the raindrop cake several times now. When the strawberry is added, it definitely slightly muddles the color of the cake so it isn’t quite as transparent. Unfortunately, because I’m in the US, I couldn’t find the cool agar which the Japanese use to have a crystal clear raindrop. I came across this variation when I was researching how to make raindrop cakes. This strawberry version of the original raindrop cake makes a fun and light dessert.Īfter successfully making the raindrop cake (read my original post for more background information on the raindrop cake), I’ve been wanting to make one with a fresh strawberry in the middle. |
